The failure of most e-learning courses

One of the benefits to e-learning over conventional classroom-based learning is that it enables students to learn on their own terms; going at their own pace and learning the topics that fill in the gaps in their knowledge. But what good is this approach if we don’t tailor the learning experience to the user, or treat learners as the individuals they are?

Most online courses are exactly the same for every learner enrolled in the course. You run through it in a linear fashion and then at the end you complete an assessment. This isn’t tailored to the learner and it’s incredibly inefficient.

Enter the pre-course assessment: allowing for individualised learning

By assessing the learner before they enrol, we can tailor the course to the individual learner, expanding on topics they show weakness in and skipping the topics they’re competent in. This tailored approach brings efficiency to e-learning, saving time and improving the effectiveness of your learning.

Offer courses that improve on their current knowledge

Based on the learner’s answers to the pre-course assessment, the LMS can suggest the courses that would be most beneficial to the learner.

We developed this for self-help therapy courses that identified the learner’s mental health condition and suggested a course that could help them manage it.

However this approach works well within employee training where time spent within e-learning is time (and money) lost in the business.

Skip the lessons the user demonstrates competency in

The pre-course assessment helps us to understand the individual learner’s strengths. If the learner demonstrates competency in a particular topic, we won’t force the learner to re-learn those concepts again, reducing the time the learner must spend on your course.

More thorough lessons to fill the knowledge gaps

Similarly, the assessment identifies the learner’s weaknesses. The learning management system may then choose to present additional information about that topic for a more thorough learning experience.

Bonus: pre-course assessment improves engagement too

It’s no secret that some e-learning courses can be boring when they don’t challenge their learners, and it’s the learners suffers as a result; this is particularly true within the employee or compliance training space. However, by treating learners as individuals and tailoring the course to their needs, engagement naturally rises.
